Haverstraw Community Garden Officially Opens - 6.7.10
The Village of Haverstraw and The Haverstraw Center is pleased to announce that in cooperation with the North Rockland Central School District, the Haverstraw Community Garden will hold a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on June 7th at 7:00pm in the garden. Come celebrate the garden with elected officials, partnering agencies, local gardeners and community advocates. This event is open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.
The community garden will operate as a joint use space for the Haverstraw Middle School, The Haverstraw Community Center and North Rockland residents to garden. A community garden is a space where friends and neighbors can grow vegetables, fruits, and relationships; and a place of recreation, education, and connection.
The Haverstraw Community Garden is located between the Haverstraw Middle School and The Haverstraw Center at 50 West Broad Street.
There are still some community/resident plots available. Those wishing to reserve a plot may do so by downloading the form at http://www.voh-ny.com/index.htm or by calling Marion Breland-Oswald or Peggy Koval at The Haverstraw Center at 845-429-5731.
There will be volunteer opportunities throughout the growing season for all residents to become involved in the garden. Opportunities may include tending to the Plant-a-Row for the hungry plot, working with the school and community center to cultivate their plots and more.
This community garden is made possible by a network of Community Partners including the Village of Haverstraw, North Rockland Central School District, Rockland County Department of Health, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the North Rockland Garden Consortium. The garden was funded by the Rockland County Department of Health through the Healthy Communities Capacity Building Initiative from the New York State Department of Health.
To RSVP for the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony or for more information about the Haverstraw Community Garden contact Marion Breland-Oswald at 845-429-5731.
