Family-friendly guided walk to take place Sunday, August 8th Health Dep't marks World Breastfeeding Week
A family-friendly event will take place at Demarest Kill Park in New City from 9:30am - 11:00am on Sunday, August 8th led by the Rockland County Trail Guide Docents in partnership with the Eat Well Play Hard Program and Women, Infants, Children (WIC) of the Rockland County Department of Health.
Throughout the morning, young children will be entertained with nature games, bark rubbings, clowns from RSVP “Clowns R Us”, and fake tattoos. In addition free, healthy snacks and other prizes will be provided. A vendors fair including not-for-profit and government agencies will be available for answering questions and collecting information about breastfeeding, WIC benefits, and general health.
The highlight of this event is an easy, short, nature walk (about 1/2 mile loop) that is geared towards families with small children. The walk is appropriate for toddlers through seniors. The path is a partially paved roadway and a partially mulched and/or dirt trail. The trail is primarily flat, with some slight inclines. The guided walk will include a scavenger hunt and will begin at 10:15am and end at approximately 10:45am. For participants more interested in the history of the park and Rockland County, you won’t want to miss the docent interpretive history discussion.
Schedule of Events:
9:30am – Lyme Awareness Dance
9:45am – Clowning around and tattoos
10:00am – Predator/Prey Game
10:15 – 10:45am – Walk with scavenger hunt and bark etchings

The event will also celebrate World Breastfeeding Week. This year’s theme, ‘Breastfeeding – The Baby Friendly Way’, recognizes the importance of supporting mothers from the beginning of their breastfeeding experience so they can be successful in achieving their goal to breastfeed their babies.
“Breastfeeding and exercise have great health benefits for both mother and baby. Join us as we celebrate this festive event,” said Dr. Joan Facelle, Rockland County Commissioner of Health.
Participants should wear proper footwear (close-toed shoes). In addition walkers should bring water and snacks, and sunscreen is recommended.
Walks are sponsored by the Rockland County Division of Environmental Resources, the Rockland County AmeriCorps program and the Rockland County Department of Health’s Steps to a Healthier Rockland program.
